How do I dispute a medical bill with AI?
Three people used ChatGPT or Claude to check medical and dental bills line by line, then appeal. Here is what they did and the prompts they shared.
Steps
- Ask the provider for an itemized bill with billing (CPT) codes, and get your insurer's explanation of benefits.
- Remove your name, account and policy numbers, then give the bill to the AI.
- Ask it to look up what Medicare pays for each code and to flag duplicates, unbundled charges or care you didn't get (Matt Rosenberg's approach).
- Check every flagged item yourself. Rosenberg ran the analysis past a second AI and read the Medicare rules.
- Have the AI draft a dispute or appeal letter. Edit it so every claim is one you can back up.
- Send it through the provider's billing office or your insurer's appeal process, and keep copies.
Prompts
Make a spreadsheet with these CPT codes and research what Medicare pays for each one
Check this for accuracy. Examine every detail. Flag any errors.

Watch out: AI can get billing rates and rules wrong. Rosenberg says he doesn't recommend using AI as your lawyer. Jamie Phillis's first dental appeal was denied.
